In the Fall of 1987, while an undergraduate at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, I began my journey in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. From the beginning, Sigma represented more than an organization—it embodied sisterhood, scholarship, and service in action. I was drawn not only to its legacy of excellence but to the women who exemplified integrity, intellect, and meaningful community impact.
As an undergraduate member of the Epsilon Beta Chapter, I learned early that wearing our royal blue and gold carried both honor and responsibility. Serving as Chapter Tamiochus, Black Student Association representative, and NPHC representative strengthened my leadership skills in accountability, collaboration, and execution, laying the foundation for my continued service as a professional, volunteer, and sorority member.
After graduation, my commitment to Sigma remained steadfast, though my active membership paused for financial reasons until 2010. I reentered the sisterhood at the 53rd Biennial Boule in Palm Springs, California. I transitioned into alumnae membership with Zeta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Harvey, Illinois, where I served as 1st Anti-Basileus and Chaplain. In 2011, I transferred to Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Oak Lawn, Illinois, where alumnae service broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of governance, financial stewardship, and organizational sustainability.
Intentional about serving where my expertise could add the greatest value, I focused my alumnae leadership on finance and operations. At Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter, I served as Tamiochus and Chair of the Budget & Finance Committee (2012–2015; 2018–2020), and also served on the Scholarship Committee (2017–2020). Additionally, I later served as Rhomania Co-Chair (2018–2020). In 2020, I was elected Central Region Tamiochus, serving three terms through June 2026, while chairing the Budget & Finance Committee and Executive Finance Committee and serving on the Time & Place Committee. During the 2023–2025 sorority year, I was appointed Co-Vice Chair of the International Planning and Budget Committee, where I helped create and launch F.O.C.U.S., a financial officer training program for the sisterhood.
Through service at the local, regional, and international levels, I have remained committed to transparency, sound financial practices, leadership development, and policies that protect our assets while positioning Sigma Gamma Rho for sustainable growth. Throughout this journey, I have remained guided by a simple principle: every decision should honor both our founders’ vision and our future members. I further deepened my commitment to the sorority in 2014 when I was inducted as a Ruby Member and in 2017, by becoming Life Member #1203.
Sigma Gamma Rho has shaped me—personally, professionally, and spiritually. It has strengthened my leadership voice, expanded my service impact, and affirmed my belief that excellence is not accidental; it is intentional and sustained. As I reflect on my journey from undergraduate member to seasoned leader, I remain grateful, grounded, and committed. My “why” has never changed: to serve Sigma Gamma Rho with integrity, competence, and heart—ensuring our sorority remains strong, stable, and prepared for generations to come.
